Celebrating Reading Week

I survived reading week!!

Let me tell you - this week did NOT go as planned.
Oh! But first, you can read last year's Reading week HERE.

But, here's the little reason this week didn't go as planned.

This little girl gave us quite the scare Wednesday morning and I had to head to the E.R. with her. Thankfully, Ron was home that morning and I have a WONDERFUL team that really helped out... and PTL, she suffered nothing but a minor concussion. It could have been a LOT worse.

She looks all like her silly and goofy self, doesn't she?! Man. I'm so thankful she's alright.

So, anyway, back to Seuss. week.

The kids EAT the books alive, all.week.long. I put them away after the week is over and they beg me to keep them out. lol

OH! And here's a little #flashbackfriday to a few years ago. Look how little A and B are! And yes...those are cat shoes. lol

So anyway... man, I feel like I have ADHD right now haha!

Back to Seuss week.

This is the spirit week schedule we went by this year.

On Monday, we did some character analysis with Cat in the Hat.

I always love how their drawings come out!

And we started our Guided Reading using one of the Scholastic New Magazines.... comparing fiction and nonfiction.

Even though Tuesday was "Oh, The Places You'll Go" theme - I kind of use that just so I can get their pictures in their college shirts for the balloons (you'll see that later), we also did Green Eggs and Ham.... working on rhyming words is SO hard (being able to produce rhyming words anyway.)

(aren't my standards so pretty on the wall?? haha... forgot the last word, but already put the period, messed up the actual standard number... whatever. lol. This is real life, people)

On Wednesday, I wasn't there... boo! It's one of my favorite days.  BUT, I sent my girl in to school with some Wacky-ness going on.

and while I was out, they did their Wacky Wednesday class book...

On Thursday, we needed to get started on their balloons!! So we made a quick chart of things they wanted to do or be when they grew up.

Then... they turned them into their balloon writing!! This is one of my most favorite things we make all year! They always turn out soooo cute.

Friday.. we had some fun with Fish!! Fish Math is one of my favorites.

Annnnd... we ended with Schlopp!! Schlopp, schlopp, beautiful schlopp! Beautiful schlopp with a cherry on top!!

annnnd... now I'm exhausted, and ready to kick my feet up and enjoy a book on the beach this weekend! Yes please.

Beginning March (Freebies!)

I can't believe tomorrow is March! EEK!

Well, we have been super busy doing some fun Dr. Seuss stuff for Read Across America week! Check out some of the fun things we're doing HERE.

One of the first things we did this week, was our newest window clings. I was just so in love with our February ones  that I decided to do them EVERY month!

See how I do them HERE and click HERE to download the templates for each month. I'll be adding templates each month, as I do them. So be sure to come back for the others!

And tomorrow.... we'll be getting everything for March ready!

Homework Folders (see what's in my homework folders in THIS post)

I'll be back to (hopefully) share more of what we've been up to!

Make sure to check out my Reading Week post!!

Rainbow Week

This week was Rainbow week!!  I am not going to lie. I LOVE when this week comes around! I just love all the colors in my room!! It's so pretty and cheery and happy!

Here is {last year's} Rainbow Week.

This year's board is pretty similar....

The Rainbow streamer idea comes from {A Cupcake for the Teacher}.

The Pots of Gold writing and craft is a freebie from {The Teacher Wife}.

I also make our Name Rainbows. This cute idea came from{ Reagan' Rainbow Namebow!} I send home "homework" for the parents to write adjectives that describe their kids that start with the first letter. When they bring them back, I write out the adjectives on some cut out strips.  I give them their cloud that I have traced out and written their name on and the strips and have them put it together.

Our stories of the week were a nonfiction and fiction book.

For the fiction book, we summarized it - and we learned a BIG lesson.... using pictures to help us! The character isn't named... nor does the book use any pronouns. So we had a BIG discussion on whether it was a boy or girl...using pictures to tell a part of the story the words don't.

Then they wrote it out on their own.  You can grab these free summary cards {HERE}.

We also did {Rainbow Similes}. I LOVE doing these! I've been doing them for YEARS, with 1st, 2nd and 3rd graders!

We start with making lists of things that are those colors.

Then I make my own similes with their help...

and this ALWAYS brings good conversation about using the a/an articles.  This anchor chart is a freebie from {The Teacher Wife}.

Then they write their own in their learner's notebook....and after I approve it, they get the neat paper to write on. They sharpie and trace over the color words.

Then it's time to do the tear art rainbow!

Don't they look just so pretty!?!?

Another thing we do that I LOVE to do is another version of my Math with Food! This time it was {Skittles} or also known as {Rainbow Candy Math}.

I usually make "books" out these activities. I have the kids decorate the cover and then they glue it on the book. I LOVE how this girl used what she learned during our science talks to illustrate!!

Here are some things we did in our book....it really is amazing what kind of math skills you can review using Skittles!
