Number Sense with 2-Digit Numbers

So we're FINALLY into a routine....

And we're finally into a grove with our learning... and we're really getting into using our math notebooks as a resource - not just a math journal.

One of the first things we did was glue in our hundreds chart. I had them highlight the columns, as we talked about odd and even.

... and we've been diving straight into number sense and 2-digit numbers.  I'm not even going to lie. I have missed teaching 2nd grade math. I love teaching 2nd grade math. 1st grade math was not my favorite. 2nd and 3rd grade?? They're my jam.

So, here are some things we did with our 2-digit number sense.

We've been working on building, expanding, and writing out numbers....

Then we moved to all the different way to express numbers....

We did how many tens and ones, drawing out the base ten blocks, the expanded form, and word form. THEN we did the hundreds chart addition and subtraction problems.... I'll do this activity again with 3-digit numbers a little differently.

I had them write out the hundreds chart math problems in their math notebooks first, then they got to do the posters.

We've now moved into 3-digit number sense!  These kids are really getting the hang of it!

Have I said how much I love teaching 2nd grade math?!
